The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is a centralized computer system providing information to federal firearms licensees (FFLs) on whether a prospective purchaser is eligible to receive or possess firearms. Courts and clerks have a critical role to play when it comes to reporting necessary information regarding qualifying defendants. Specifically, district and county clerks are required to report on mental health adjudications and commitments.
